Director Anthony Minghella's talents for stagecraft and melodrama are on far better display in this Hitchcockian gloss than they were in his overrated English Patient. Cinematographer John Seale's picturesque scenery is chewed stylishly by a sparkling cast, and if the film is ultimately less than the sum of its parts, just enjoy the parts.
